I had a great Saturday afternoon at BP with Evan Beaver. We nabbed 50
species in just over two hours. The water around the bird hide was low and
the birds were therefore not as dispersed as usual. Amongst the
resident *Black-winged
Stilts *were a few *Red-necked Avocets*, 30-40 *Bar-tailed Godwits*,
many *Black-fronted
Dotterals* and a single *Red-capped Plover*.
Looking out accross the Bay towards the Rhodes shopping centre we could see
*White-faced Heron *and what appeared (from size) to be *Great Egret
*and *Intermediate
Egret*.
Over on the Wentworth Common side we were treated to magnificent views
of *White-bellied
Sea Eagle *and were surprised to come accross a very confiding family of *Brown
Quail*, a bird I've not seen before at BP. The revegetation on the Wentworth
Common side is starting to look really good, with a lovely thick understory
of grasses quickly developing. The authorities are clearly doing a great
job.
A bonus was a *Glossy Ibis* which we accidentally flushed on the way back to
the car from the ponds just inside the Bennelong Road gate. Three *Royal
Spoonbills *and a *White-faced Heron *were also on those ponds.
I hope everyone else had some good birding over the weekend.
Alistair
