Apologies for the slightly belated report. On Thursday 1st May 2008,
Micha Jackson, Willem Remena and I headed west from Brisbane to spend
the day in Durikai State Forest and the area from Gore to Inglewood,
following Gavin Goodyear's earlier report of Regent Honeyeater at the
Durikai dam.

No regents, but as always the dam and surrounds were very productive.
Honeyeaters were particularly numerous including BLACK-CHINNED,
BROWN-HEADED, YELLOW-TUFTED, STRIPED, FUSCOUS, YELLOW-FACED and
WHITE-NAPED HONEYEATERS, as well as NOISY FRIARBIRD. Two pairs of
TURQUOISE PARROTS were seen near the dam, and LITTLE LORIKEETS were
abundant. Other birds around the dam included WEEBILL, DUSKY
WOODSWALLOW, SPOTTED PARDALOTE and RESTLESS FLYCATCHER.

On a track in Durikai slightly to the west of the dam we located a
family of SPECKLED WARBLERS, as well as JACKY WINTER and GREY-CROWNED
BABBLER.

On Cement Mills Road which runs south from Gore we had 8 SQUATTER
PIGEONS cross the road in front of the car (this was immediately north
of MacIntyre Brook). Also on Cement Mills Road were APOSTLEBIRDS and
WHITE-PLUMED HONEYEATERS.

Lake Coolmunda had the usual waterbirds, along with a few MUSK DUCK.

On Mosquito Creek Road, which runs north off the highway opposite Lake
Coolmnuda we had great views of 4 BLUE BONNETS, a party of WHITE-WINGED
FAIRY-WRENS, RED-WINGED PARROTS and a lone SOUTHERN WHITEFACE (in a
large flock of YELLOW-RUMPED THORNBILLS).

The birding always seems to be productive in this area, and it is the
closest to Brisbane that several of the above species can be reliably
seen, and as such it is always a joy to get out there.

Oh, and the first raptor of the day was a BLACK FALCON at Willowbank.

Cheers, Pete Kyne (and Micha Jackson and Willem Remena).

DIRECTIONS:

Durikai State Forest is situated between Warwick and Inglewood off the
Cunningham Highway, in Southeast Queensland. The dam is about 8km west
of Thanes Creek Road if coming from the east (i.e. from Warwick). It is
on the left hand side of the road and can be easy to miss from the
highway. The small entrance track is immediately after the end of a
metal guard rail on the highway. The dam is 6km east of the Karara Pub
if travelling from the west. Cement Mills Road runs south off the
Cunningham Hwy from Gore which is further west along the Cunningham Hwy
(this road is also a good spot for Ground Cuckoo-shrikes). Mosquito
Creek Road runs north off the Cunningham Hwy opposite Lake Coolmunda and
is signposted. Apart from the above birds, some other noteworthy species
often seen at Durikai include Diamond Firetail, White-browed Babbler,
Crested Shrike-tit and White-eared Honeyeater.
