I would be most grateful if anyone on birding-aus can give me any
information concerning Ivan Kinny.
Olivier Messiaen was one of the most highly regarded composers of serious
music of the 20th century. He was also a fine ornithologist. He notated
bird-song in the field, and then represented it in his musical compositions.
His last major opus, "Eclairs sur l'au-dela" commissioned by the New York
Philharmonic has one whole section ("L'Oiseaux-Lyre et la Ville-Fiancee)
devoted to the Superb Lyrebird that he heard when in Australia to supervise
performance of his works by our orchestras for our bicentenary celebrations
in 1988.
Ivan Kinny is mentioned in Messiaen's biography as having given him
notations of the butcherbird.
Sorry I can't offer any more information than that. One of Messiaen's best
known works was written while he was in a P-O-W camp during World War 2.
So Kinny may have been in touch with him any time after that, and maybe it
was before tape-recorders were into general use, since he sent Messiaen
notations rather than recordings.
TIA
Syd
