Micha Jackson, Dan Mantle and I observed Cattle Egrets on Paradise Rd at
the Western Treatment Plant last Friday (2 May 2008). Not living in
Melbourne we didn't know these were anything special.
Other nice and/or interesting sightings (at least for us non-locals)
were 3 Brolga behind Paradise Rd Lagoon, 11 Blue-winged Parrots near
Walsh's Lagoon, at least 5 Banded Lapwings in their regular spot to the
west of the plant, 4 Black-tailed Godwit on a lagoon that I don't know
the name heading east towards the Conservation Ponds, an immature
Red-kneed Dotterel on the western Conservation Pond, 2 Chestnut-breasted
Mannikins flying over near Walsh's Lagoon (I assume these are escapees?
Are these regularly sighted?), Black Falcon (2 sightings), Black Kite
and Little Eagle.
Plenty of Flame Robins at Point Cook Coastal Park.
On the drive up to the Bulga section of Tarra-Bulga NP in south
Gippsland, Micha and I had 9 Superb Lyrebirds on the roadside. No hint
of Pilotbird though.
A flock of about 30 Blue-winged Parrots were seen on the saltmarsh at
Venus Bay, as well as Striated Fieldwren, but no emu-wrens. Many Flame
Robins nearby. Scarlet Robins near Yanakie. Wilson's Promontory was
fairly quiet although there were a lot of Crescent Honeyeaters around, a
pair of Hooded Plovers on Squeaky Beach, and Emu on Five Mile Road.
Much to our disappointment we could not locate Gang-gangs anywhere we
visited in Gippsland.

Subject: Cattle Egrets in Melbourne
First Cattle Egrets I've seen this autumn - five keeping company with
four
horses (one each, and one horse had two) in the paddocks of Yarra Flats
Parkthis morning - seen as I drove round The Boulevard in East Ivanhoe.
I
have seen no reports of any others in the Melbourne area.
