Hi Paul,
I suspect you may be incorrect about Mallee Emu-Wrens and the like. People
often go only to a known place (Nowingi Track) to twitch them. Even if
people go further afield, they typically go to either Hattah or
Murray-Sunset NP. Meanwhile, Mallee Emu-Wrens have quietly gone extinct
from almost every other place they occurred in the last 20 years. If not
for extensive, rigorous searches looking for mallee species we may not have
realised how dire the situation really is right now. This, to my mind, is
one of the dangers of twitching: assuming a species is ok because you can
still find it at the "usual" spot.
Regards,
Chris
ps. I know several people whose goal it is to find Chestnut-breasted
Whiteface in the Northern Territory, thus demonstrating that people
concentrate too much on a known area to look for rare birds and tweaking the
South Australians' noses by removing their only endemic species :)
"You've made an interesting observation here, Jen. I suspect that with
rarities such as the OBP or the Mallee Emu-wren, there are enough people
looking for them at any given time that we would notice pretty well
immediately if they "disappeared"."
