Bowra, Cunnamulla and Lake Bindegolly 3-6 May 2008 – Flock Bronzewings, Grey
Falcons +++
Steve Murray and I are just back from 3 ½ days birding at Bowra with trips out
around Cunnamulla and Lake Bindegolly.
Highlights:
1000+ Flock Bronzewings 30km n. of Cunnamulla
14 Species of birds-of-prey including 1-2 Black Falcons, 3 Grey Falcons
together at a normal Bowra roost site (amazing views!), 4 Little Eagles and
adult Black-breasted Buzzard.
1000s of woodswallows including 100s of Masked and White-browed.
100s and 100s of Crimson Chats at Bowra and 2 Orange Chats at lake Bindegolly.
Good numbers of honeyeaters including Pied and Black north of Cunnamulla and
Pieds at Lake Bindegolly. White-fronted, Grey-headed and Painted at Bowra.
White-browed Treecreepers at Bowra (3 and 2) and 2 at Eulo.
4 Groups of Chestnut-crowned and 1 group of 5 Halls Babblers.
1 male (singing) Chestnut-breasted Quail-Thrush.
Stunning views of Bourke’s (pair) and Mulga (3 pairs) Parrots. 100s and 100s of
Budgerigars at Bowra.
3 Owlet-nightjars on the road to Cunnamulla and views of Little Buttons Quails
at night down to a few metres. Spotted Nightjars (2) at Bowra.
2 Stubble Quails north of Cunnamulla.
Other interesting stuff – 2 groups of Ground Cuckoo-shrikes, 2 Chirruping
Wedgebills at Lake Bindegolly, a few Crested Bellbirds at Bowra, c10 Pink
Cockatoos at Bowra and 2 at lake Bindegolly. 4 Banded Lapwings in the middle of
Cunnamulla. A few Plum-headed Finches north of Cunnamulla and in Bowra. A few
White-winged Fairy Wrens at Lake Bindegolly, Red-browed Pardelotes and lots of
Thornbills at Bowra – checked lots of Chestnut-rumped but could not find any
Slaty-backed (are they genuinely recorded from Bowra?)
Tens of Thousands of water birds of Lake Bindegolly – even though it’s still
far from full.
Steve has photos of most things including the Flock Bronzewings and Grey
Falcons!
