Subject: Common Bronzewings at Wilson Reserve, Ivanhoe, Vic.

On Tuesday 29th April, during a stroll in Wilson Reserve, we saw no fewer than 11 Common Bronzewings feeding in a flock, out in the open on the Chelsworth Park Oval. Admittedly quite close to a collection of wattles and gums planted round the west end of the oval, but quite a surprise just the same. A maintenance vehicle alarmed them and they all settled in the trees and preened themselves. I wouldn't quite call them a population explosion, but over the past 20 years their numbers have gradually increased, taking advantage of extensive planting of natives, particularly wattles, in riverside areas in Melbourne's suburbs. Another area where their numbers have increased in the same period is Banyule Flats, further upstream.
