The Sunshine State morphed into the Smart State a couple of elections
ago. You could say that the SE coastline from Cape Otway to Bundaberg
is one extended retirement village - in some regions the median age
has increased by up to six years over the last decade.

Hi Chris,
I enjoy your reference to Adelaide. "retirement village' is a
significant
upgrade from the Victorian Premier's 'backwater'. I am curious where
the
'smart' ' sunshine' state is? You sign off with 'Ciao' - is it some
place in
Italy?
Thanks for the laugh.

Subject: [Birding-Aus] Long distance pelicans
I don't know if the bugger bred or not but about three years ago one
of Greg
Johnston's tagged pelicans turned up in Wonga Wetlands (Albury). I was
teaching wildlife rehabilitators at the time at the Education centre
so the
bird was handed over. It had a mild case of Pododermatitis so a
couple of
injections and some instructions for care and maintenance and I left
it with
the local WIRES branch. It became notorious in Albury/wodonga with
(complete with a picture in the local rag) for its behaviour with
another
recalcitrant long-nosed albatross. A year later on my way to Cobar I
stopped
off on the Bogan at Nyngan for tea and a twitch only to find pelican
222
cruising the river escorted by that infamous ground nester the
Little Black
Shag. One presumes that like most escapees from the retirement
village of
Adelaide it was on its way to the smart (or is it sunshine) state as
well.
