A few sightings of note over the past few days April 14-17 2008:
Cassowary male with 3 chicks Cassowary House, Kuranda daily.
Magpie Goose 1 Biboohra April 17
Plumed Whistling Duck 2 and 11 small ducklings on floodwater near
Biboohra, Mareeba, April 17, my first local breeding record
Wandering Whistling Duck Pair and 7 ducklings Hastie's Swamp April 16.
Black Bittern 1 Mareeba Wetlands entrance road Apr 15- getting late to
be still around here
Helmeted Guineafowl 2 Henry Hannam Drive April 15, debatably
countable. Might be good enough for a year tick!
Pacific Baza 3 at Black Mt Road, Kuranda April 12-14, one at Mareeba
April 15, a small movement it seems.
Square-tailed Kite one at Mareeba April 15
Dollarbird April 16 Mareeba TAFE, a late immature
White-headed Pigeon- 20+ Yungaburra April 16
Topknot Pigeon a few small flocks around Yungaburra/Lake Barrine area
Squatter Pigeon 4 at Granite Gorge April 15, and 2 Mareeba TAFE April 16
Papuan Frogmouth 2 Kingfisher Park April 17
Shining Bronze-Cuckoo 1 heard Cassowary House April 19, the first this
year
Little Bronze-Cuckoo (ex-Goulds) 1 singing Black Mt Road, Kuranda
April 16
Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher Adult KP April 17, quite late
Cicadabird the rainforest whistling call one still calling up to April
17, late for this to be still calling.
Rufous Fantail first of the winter along Black Mt Road April 14
Leaden/ Satin Flycatcher 1 female plumaged bird seen briefly Barron R
Kuranda April 14, may well have been Satin
Pale Yellow Robin pair nesting Cassowary House
Mountain Thornbill common and noisy Mt Lewis April 17
Chowchilla 3 Black Mt Road April 17 and also at Mt Lewis
Blue-faced Parrotfinch 2 singles, both adults, Mt Lewis April 17
No Pygmy-geese were seen anywhere, of either species, but so much
water about no doubt they are dispersed all over the place.
