Hello everyone,
In the past fortnight I have observed 15 species of
raptor and most in good numbers. Is this normal for
Autumn or am I just lucky? Here is my list so far:
-Black-shouldered Kite: numerous out west and a couple
in the lower Hunter
-Whistling Kite: Everywhere including 6 birds together
at Minmi and Ash Island.
-Square-tailed Kite: 2 at East Maitland
-Brown Goshawk: 3 in the Maitland area and 1 at Ash
Island
-Grey Goshawk: F3 Freeway at Ourimbah
-Osprey: Hunter River
-White-bellied Sea-eagle: Everywhere, common
-Little Eagle: Capertee Valley and Maitland
-Wedge-tailed eagle: Numerous out west and 3 over
Minmi
-Spotted Harrier: 1 Mudgee
-Marsh Harrier: Very common Maitland and lower Hunter
-Brown Falcon: Common out west and Ash Island
-Nankeen Kestrel: Everywhere
-Peregrine Falcon: 1 Bylong
-Aust. Hobby: Very common at the moment. Probably see
one or two a day
In other news, flushed a Buff-banded Rail today at the
local park in Morpeth. Also large numbers of Friarbird
and Striated Pardalote passing through. Flock of
juvenile Chestnut-breasted Mannikins fed in the reeds
and Tawny Grassbirds were showing nicely.
Lots of young Black Duck, Moorhen and Swamphen.
White-breasted Woodswallow and White-throated Gerygone
are still in the area.
Happy Birding all,
Grant Brosie
