A good program for recording the birds on a PDA is cyber tracker (http://www.cybertracker.co.za/) it runs on windows mobile.

It was written for the United Nations  for recording field work in Africa.

It is free but does require setting up the relative databases, which is comparatively easy. This is done on a PC and the field data is transfered from the PDA to the PC.

I have an Australian bird database if anyone is interested. It is a work in progress so take and modify.
