Hi Russ,
That's now the second (and third) reports I've heard of Lewin's Rail
on Sarah Island - a bogey bird for me, too. Will have to try to get
down that way ASAP. Alos, haven't noticed any unusual Tawny-crowned
HE's, though it's not a bird we see often.

I have finally seen my longstanding bogey-bird, Lewin's Rail, at
the Altona,Vic site on 13th March, within two minutes of arriving.
However, it was preceded by an extremely frustrating experience
on Sarah Is, Macquarie Is, Tas some 10 days earlier.Walking around
the island during the cruise stop I heard what I guessed
(accurately, as it eventuated) was a Lewin's Rail calling from
dense, tangled undergrowth near the penitentary. So we staked-out
the area for about 30 mins but never saw the bird, although at one
stage it was calling about a metre from my feet.Oh well, that's
better than my normal Lewin's Rail searching experience,I thought,
I usually get absolutely nothing.
But back on board, a couple of ladies form the Echuca BOCA
group informed me they had great views of a Lewin's Rail at the
second jetty. That'd be right, I thought.
So if the Altona site dries-up, head over to Tassie, get to
Strahan, take the cruise, go to Sarah Is and hope you pick the
right spot to stake-out!!
