On Sunday I toured many of the Lockyer Valley Wetlands, south-east Queensland,
and in doing so managed to record 11 birds of prey. They were:
Nankeen Kestrel (several locations)
Australian Hobby (Lake Clarendon)
Whistling Kite (Lake Clarendon and other locs.)
Little Eagle (1) -Lake Clarendon
White-bellied Sea-eagle (1) Lake Dyer / Bill Gunn Dam, near Laidley
Wedge-tailed Eagle (1) Lake Clarendon
Swamp Harrier (2) 1 at Lake Clarendon and 1 at Seven Mile Lagoon
Square-tailed Kite (1) northern end of Lake Atkinson, near the caravan park
Black-shouldered Kite (1) near Gatton
Brown Falcon (3) Lake Clarendon
Black Kite (2) Gatton Dump and near Gatton UQ campus
Other good records for the day were of a Black-necked Stork at Seven Mile
Lagoon; a Banded Lapwing and four Glossy Ibis at Lake Clarendon and two
Comb-crested Jacana at nearby Jaencke's Lagoon.
Adares Road, just north of Gatton, proved to be quite diverse in terms of
woodland birds, with 2 White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, three Rainbow Bee-eater, a
Restless Flycatcher, 2 White-backed Swallow, five White-breasted Woodswallow. I
observed the cuckoo-shrikes for some time, particularly one individual, and
noticed that on each of the five or six occasions it alighted it shuffled its
wings BFCS-style. Has anyone else had similar experiences with this bird? I
thought this trait was specific to Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes.
In all, the wetlands were fairly quiet. Probably the best places were Lake
Clarendon, Adares Road and Culquhoun's Road Wetland, a short distance south of
Gatton. The latter also had Wandering Whistling-duck. All had water in them,
but Lake Atkinson should be looking better in the months to come. Many of the
migrants had gone, with only stragglers remaining.
