Over the weekend I had three days up in the Border Ranges along with
Penny Brockmann. We got a reasonable list of birds over all, but the
rainforest was rather quiet, with no fruiting trees in evidence, and
so virtually no rainforest pigeons (excepting White-headed and Brown
Cuckoo-doves). Unfortunately our walk into the Murray Scrub (Toonumbar
NP), for which I had some hopes, had to be abandoned for rain. Best
bird was certainly a female Rifle-bird feeding one dependent young
near Forest Top in the Border Ranges NP, but we also found a
Pale-yellow Robin, Rufous Fantails and plenty of Catbirds in the
rainforest. Scratchings of Lyrebirds (Alberts?) and Button-quail were
found, but no birds seen.
After driving home from Armidale to Gloucester, Penny rang to report
two families of Magpie Geese on Dangars Lagoon (just south of Uralla).
One pair had four young, and another three young, all still quite
small, so they will presumably be there for some time. I'll try to get
there myself over the weekend.
