A Black Bittern was seen today on the Lefroy Brook, behind the Pemberton
Caravan Park. It was reported by Pam and George Agar who had stayed on after
the Birds Australia long weekend camp-out. Unfortunately, most of the other
BAWA campers had already begun the trek back to Perth before the bird was seen.
Black Bitterns have been reported very rarely from the south west in recent
times. Interestingly, this bird was found a few kilometres north of the site on
the Warren River where Black Bitterns were reported breeding in late 2006
(first breeding record for ~60years)
I went back later this afternoon and found the bird under the bridge where
Pump Hill Rd crosses Lefroy Brook and was able to get a couple of photos.
