Good Afternoon Birders,
I've just had great views of Square-Tailed Kites from the rear balcony
in Lapstone, for the first time in a few months. This is the first
time I've seen more than one bird at a time though, which I estimated
to be a juvenille and male adult. The juvenille didn't have a properly
white head yet, was missing a few primarys and tail feathers but was
very close otherwise. The adult was almost exactly the same size
(Debus lists the weights as about 30% differrent), bright white head
and perfect square tail. Could they be a breeding pair? Do old males
pair with immature females?
If anyone is interesting in seeing these birds they're usually around
in bursts. We might not see them for a few months, then (previously
only one) would return quite obviously for a week or more. Wait for a
bright day with a gentle westerly, then drive around and check the
railway station and the bush behind the netball courts and oval. And
listen for the Noisy Miners,
they don't seem to like them.
