Koels and Archaeopteryx

I had my first good look at a young Koel the other day, in a friends
backyard in Canberra. It reminded me instantly of the drawings I've
seen of Archaeopteryx and seemed, to my untrained eye, to behave
roughly like a lizard that was surprised to be flying; ie hopping
around trees a lot, sitting still for long periods and more
importantly, flopping straight into the foliage, rather than a
controlled landing on a branch. Are they an evolutionarily 'old'
species? Or a product of their environment?
