I had my first trip to the Western Treatment Plant on Friday 25 January and
what an experience it was.
My overwhelming first impression was the sheer quantity of birds present
and I have never before seen such numbers of Shelducks, Musk Ducks and
pink-eared Ducks. I also had the opportunity to see species that I don't
come across very often; Cape Barren Geese, Glossy Ibis and Royal
Spoonbills.
I did find the track network and lagoon system a bit confusing and I am
sure I would have identified more species if I wasn't concentrating on
navigating and if I knew where to look (bits of black plastic tied to
fences, etc).
I will definitely have a better map for my next visit and won't knock back
any tips regarding good locations.
