We were fortunate to meet the great man at the World Ornithological Congress in Christchurch NZ in 1990. His biographer commented he was a very approachable down to earth man. We can vouch for that - he approached us. We who were mere amateurs amongst all the professors and top ornithologists from all over the world, he honoured us for a chat over a morning tea session at the congress. I think from memory he opened the Congress. In the 50's when I was working in NZ at Wanaka the locals always joked that Ed Hillary 'ran' up Mt Aspiring before breakfast in training for Everest.
A great man, there should be more of them.
