Dear all,

Russell has kindly let me use birding-aus to publicize the
reactivation of the PNG Bird Society journal Muruk after a long
lapse, and to offer a free copy to anyone interested.

The long gap in publication was due to funding issues, but I am
happy to say we have been able to obtain sufficient funds to complete this volume and when combined with new subscriptions at least the
next as well. Particular thanks are due to the Conservation
International’s Melanesian Centre for Biodiversity Conservation,
funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore`Foundation, who kindly came to
the rescue.

A major aim of the journal is to have a venue for publishing
significant records from New Guinea, as well as observations of
breeding and behaviour which are still very poorly known for most
species there. One important area in which the Melanesian Centre for Biodiversity is particularly interested is range extensions. Many
important records lie buried in the trip reports and notebooks of
visitors to New Guinea, and we are keen to try and get some of this
backlog of material published, particularly in the absence of
suitable journals for the region. Thanks are due to many of the big
bird tour companies who have kindly made their trip reports available to us, and much of the next issue, Volume 9 # 1, will be devoted to
summaries of significant records.

We like to treat New Guinea as a zoogeographic whole so are
interested not only in records from PNG but also from West Papua as
well. We invite contributions for consideration for publication, in
the form of short notes or papers, and have an editorial panel in
place, comprising K.D. Bishop, I. Burrows, B. J. Coates,. G. Dutson
and C. Eastwood who will be refereeing papers and notes in future, or contacting other New Guinea experts for advice. We aim to produce 2 issues per annum from now on, which reflects the time available to us to collate and produce Muruk.

All subscription money is lodged in a Muruk bank account and goes
towards the costs of producing the journal. Please help us to revive
and improve what has been a valuable source of New Guinea
ornithological information.

For a free copy let me have your mailing address. Thanks to Russell
for permission to publicize the journal via birding-aus.
