Could anyone offer some suggestions? I don't want to jump ahead of myself and proclaim to be Spotless Crakes, but if someone is familiar with the area and could lend a hand, all answers would be more than welcome!

They sound very like Black-tailed Native-hens to me. Have you looked at that possibility? Though presumably unusual in that area, BTNHs are notorious nomads, and you are not all that far from where they should be expected.
