This happens for mammals too.

One of the complicating factors is that animals are most often studied where
it is easiest to study them. that is where they have the densest population.
extrapolation over even their verified range can lead to huge over
estimations of population. For example I would suggest that we have closer
to 2000 Lumholtz's Tree-kangaroos than the official 20 000.
