Subject: Radjah Shelduck in SEQ
American birder Jack Cochrane and I had a fascinating days birding on
the Gold Coast and Hinterland yesterday when we saw 120spp, a one day
record for me. It was all the more remarkable because of the large
number of common species we didn't see, or in the case of a group of
waders at Coombabah, couldn't identify because they were too far away,
and because we had to dodge showers all day. The most surprising
sightings were 2 ducks, a Radjah Shelduck at Nindooinbah Dam at
Beaudesert, about an hour west of the Gold Coast, and a male Blue-billed
Duck at a pond on Neilson's Rd in Carrara, in the heart of the Gold
Coast. It was the first time I have seen either of these species in
South-east Qld.
My thanks to Jack for his sharp eye and especially for the Blue-bill
which he spotted very late in the day.
Regards,
