I have just returned from a lecture on Pompeii at Museum Victoria and, while walking through Exhibition Gardens, saw a kookaburra perched in a tree near the ornamental pond. When I saw it on my way to the Museum it was responding quite angrily to the unwanted attention of a magpie lark. I walked past the same tree on my way back and it was perched on the same branch. Its bill was muddy, suggesting that it had been foraging in the pond. I believe kookaburras are resident at the Botanic Gardens and I'm pretty sure I saw one fly past my building on the edge of the CBD, but I don't know if they are regular visitors to Exhibition Gardens.
