WESTERN Force rugby officials have reopened an investigation into claims players mistreated quokkas during a team bonding session on Rottnest Island last weekend following more serious allegations of animal cruelty.

Western Australian police and Rottnest Island authorities launched inquiries earlier this week after allegations players were "hammer-throwing " the protected marsupials last Friday night.

After no evidence of mistreatment could be proved, rangers said they would issue infringement notices to four players who admitted handling quokkas, which would result in $100 fines.

But after more allegations were raied in Fairfax newspapers today, Force chairman Geoff Stooke said fresh inquiries would be made.

"Further, serious allegations have been made about the mistreatment of quokkas by Western Force players on Friday night," Mr Stooke said.
