With the recent thread on the lack of bird numbers in Madagascar, I thought
that I would let you all know that Louise and I were there for 17 days in
September and I have finally completed a trip report - anybody who would
like a copy (it is quite long) can contact me directly. We organised the
whole trip through a local guide rather than travel with a group, and it
worked out very well.

I agree with a lot of what Wim Vader says about the lack of numbers of birds
in Madagascar, but this phenomenon is only accurate for the rainforests, not
for the western forests such as Zombitse and the spiny forest around
Ifaty/Mangily where birds were quite plentiful. At Ranaomafana in
particular, where it rained incessantly, it was eerily quiet - but even in
Australian rainforest in the rain, it can be very quiet. Perhaps there is a
very limited food supply in these forests which keeps numbers low?

In terms of the rampant deforestation there, everyone outside of the cities
has only one source of fuel, that being charcoal. It is difficult therefore
to see how we can tell them stop chopping down trees unless first world
countries give them some assistance in building infrastructure such as a
power grid, water supply and sewerage systems.

Cheers

Roger McGovern
