The Painted Snipe are still on the dam at 689 Cove
Road. They were a special treat for the members of the Birds Australia
Southern Queensland team of surveyors who had just completed an arduous
morning atlassing birds for the SEQWater Regional Biodiversity
Corridors Project on steep and thickly vegetated land near Shields
Lookout on the western side of Lake Somerset.
The team of Eric Anderson, Diana O’Connor, Grahame and Donalda Rogers
watched the 5 Snipe (2 females) feeding on the near edges of the dam
and flying back and forth from one side to the other for over an hour
in the middle of the day on Saturday 10/11/07. At times they were
within 60 meters of the road fence, so a telescope was not necessary
for a good view. To add to our pleasure: Great-crested Grebe, Magpie
Geese, Jacana and a Latham’s Snipe as well as the usual suspects..
(The purpose of the SEQWater Regional Biodiversity Corridors Project is
to restore vegetated linkages between existing remnants in the Brisbane
River Valley riparian corridor and the D’Aguilar Range to enhance
wildlife habitat and populations. The corridor will link Lakes
Wivenhoe, Somerset and Samsonvale
Birds Australia Southern Queensland, Birds Queensland and BrisBOCA in a
cooperative venture are conducting bird surveys that will monitor the
effect of the changes. Long term survey sites have been established and
surveying is planned to occur twice a year in spring and late summer.)
