Dear Birders,
I flew up to Port Macquarie (also in NSW) and drove to South West Rocks (a town
near to Kempsey in NSW) to look for the Lesser Yellowlegs. Very fortunately I
had arranged to meet up with Ken Shingleton at SW Rocks. Ken is of course the
person who originally found the bird. Ken took me first to the swamp at
Sunshine Reach where the bird had last been seen. it was nowhere to be seen
despite a very thorough search. He then took me to the swamp at the end of
Boyters Lane where it had been seen initially and where it had stayed for a few
days. Again there was no sign of the bird, or indeed any of the Marsh
Sandpipers with which it had been hanging out.
Ken then suggested that we then went to the first pond on the right in Boyters
Lane which he knows is a favoured place for Marsh Sandpipers. As soon as we
raised our scopes there it was! Long thin bill, eyebrows only forward of the
eye, primaries extending back past the tail, bright egg yellow legs and a bit
bigger than the Marsh Sandpipers. Great bird and thank you Ken.
regards
Peter Marsh
