Many of the headlands of the central NSW coast have remnants of littoral
rainforest. I remember holidaying at Halliday's Point about 6 -7 years
ago - this is further south than Coff's Harbour, in between Forster and
Taree, and not that far north of Newcastle. There was a small patch of
littoral forest on the edge of town, running alongside Black Head near the
bowls club, and another larger patch at Red Head, the next headland to the
north. I'm sorry I can't be clearer about the size, but it only took 5 or
6 minutes to walk from one side to the other. These tiny forests held a
surprising variety of birds: White-headed Pigeon, Regent Bowerbird, Green
Catbird, Southern Boobook (that was a surprise, perched at about head
height), King Parrot, Spangled Drongo, Variegated Fairy-Wren,
Bar-shouldered Dove, Brush Turkey, Eastern Whipbird, Lewin's White-cheeked
and Scarlet Honeyeater, Leaden Flycatcher etc. About 15Km inland is
Kiwarrak State Forest where I added birds like Black-faced Monarch, Brown
Fruit-Dove, Brown Gerygone.
Sorry about the order of this list - these are just a few of the birds I
picked out from my records, mostly in the order I saw them. It's likely
that you'll see Bowerbirds and Catbirds in any reasonable patch of
littoral forest along the central or north coast.
