Greetings,
The Golden Bowerbird or actually its replacement is now active at the site
at Longlands Gap which I have been watching for 29 seasons this year. Last
year was the only one in that time without an adult bird active there. The
bird is a bit more shy than his predecessor and the bower is not up to the
wonderful standard his forefathers set but it is still a special treat.
Please do not disturb the bird. It is to be found 3 km past the Crater turn
off heading south. park on the left in a gravel dump, cross the road and
follow the worn track along an old logging road for 80 metres. It seems like
more than this because of all the fallen timber you must climb under or
over. Where the track leaves the old road to the right you have to climb
over a forked log. The bower is east of a tree fall and not visible until
quite close so go slowly and watch for the bird.
Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers are appearing on the coast already.
Dollar Birds are back in good numbers. Other locals breeding and displaying
in good numbers.
Regards,
Alan Gillanders
