I did a quick web search to see how far south the normal range of
Black-eared Kite extends. I was rather surprised to see that Wikipedia
lists the following as SUBSPECIES of Black Kite:
Milvus migrans migrans (Boddaert, 1783): European Black Kite
Milvus migrans lineatus (J. E. Gray, 1831): Black-eared Kite
Milvus migrans govinda (Sykes, 1832): Pariah Kite
Milvus migrans affinis (Gould, 1838): Fork-tailed Kite
Milvus migrans formosanus (Kuroda, 1920): Taiwan Kite
If anyone would like to take the trouble, this Wikipedia article could do
with a bit of updating - or should we wait for the new C&B list? Anyone
keen to take Fork-tailed Kite off their list????
Russell
PS For those with a penchant for Milvus Kites and/or British rarities,
there was a Black-eared or Black Kite reported from Lincolnshire last
November. You can read ALL about it on Birdforum. There were over 260
messages about it!!
