EAGLEHAWK NECK BOAT TRIP - 30 September 2007

GROUP: Sue Baker, Tim Bawden, Mike Bysouth, David Hair, Jack
Hunt, Chris and Rosemary Lester, Greg and Judy Little, Jann and Ross
Mulholland, Tim Reid, Kerry Williams.

VESSEL/SKIPPER: Pauletta - John Males with deckie, Grant.

WEATHER: Initially, fine and sunny with 60% cloud and a NW
wind of 20 knots. There were a few drops of rain earlier. In the
afternoon, the weather became sunnier and a W wind of 25 knots.

SEA: Initially, inshore there was a slight sea of 1/2 m
with no swell but, out at and past the shelf, it increased to a 1 m very
confused swell with 1 m during the day.

ACTIVITY: Sailed 07.20 from Pirates Bay (PB) at Eaglehawk
Neck. Headed out E to our first stop 15 nm from PB to the shelf at 09.00
at 43o 01.91’S 148o 14.62’E in 105 fathoms with water temperature at 11.4o
C until 09.20. Continued out and made our second stop at 09.40 (at 3 nm
past the shelf and 17 nm from PB) in 500 fathoms (11.5o C) at 43o 01.64’S
148o 15.42’E until 10.10. Moved further north and closer to the shelf to
42o 56.39’S 148o 18.72’E and stopped 2 nm outside the shelf at 11.00 in
300 fathoms (11.6oC) until 11.45. Moved further west inside the shelf to
42o 54.55’S 148o 17.28’E and stopped at 12.05 (at 1 nm inside the shelf
and 17 nm from PB) in 67 fathoms (11.4oC). As it had been quite rough
most of the day and the weather was getting worse, started back early at
12.20 and returned to Pirates Bay at 14.35.

MAMMALS: Australian Fur-seals at the shelf.

BIRDS: A very good day out on the water with the predicted wind
and seas not eventuating, which was very fortunate. We saw a good range
of species with quite a few albatrosses, particularly great albatrosses,
which were mostly hungry. The highlights were a SKYLARK flying south (to
where ?) halfway to the shelf and the 3 PROVIDENCE PETRELS. We also had
excellent views of Diving-Petrels flying along the boat.
