Highlights of a trip to Forbes NSW 30/9/ 2007
Superb Parrot: Approx 5 kms east of Manildra in box trees adjacent to
the road. Saw 2 but didn't get my binoculars on them.
Back Yamma State Forest: A state forest of Cypress pine, Ironbark and
box. This located off the Forbes-Parkes road. Near the sign posted
location called Darooglible, about 10 km east of Forbes take the turn to
the Livestock Selling Centre and follow this road to the forest. Follow
Forest Way until you reach the cross roads of the aptly named Turquoise
Parrot Drive. Highlights at this location were: Turquoise Parrot,
Gilbert's Whistler (m), Rufous Whistler (lots), Speckled Warbler, Rufous
Songlark, Brown Treecreeper, Hooded Robin, Red capped Robin (imm).
Elsewhere in the forest I saw Inland Thornbill and Grey-Crowned Babbler.
Gum Swamp: 3--4 Km from Forbes on the West Wyalong Rd. There is a bird
hide here. Nothing special but lots of Pink-eared and Black Duck,
Hardhead, Grey Teal, Shoveller, Australian and Hoary-headed Grebe, Dusky
Moorhen, Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Couldn't find Blue-billed or Freckled
duck despite trying to scope every duck. Mind you there is a lot of
water with plenty of places to hide. A Clamorous Reedwarbler was singing
in the small patch of reeds in front of the hide.
Other: Black-tailed Native Hen on Lake Forbes.
