Whilst Whiskered Terns prefer fresh water they can also feed at sea in northern Australia. Since they migrate to PNG and Indonesia they regularly cross stretches of ocean. At this time of year we've encountered migrating flocks on pelagics off Victoria and have seen them passing from shore based sea-watches.
