Giday birders, I escaped Sydney with long time birding companion Matthew
Stanton over the APEC weekend (6th to 9th September 2007). Our aim was to
head to Round Hill Nature Reserve, central NSW with Red Lored Whistler (RLW)
being our main target. After Round hill we headed north to several other
State Forests and Nature reserves
Highlights
Brolga 2 including one bird that looked like a juv, at a wetland just west
of Condobolin.
The Wheat Paddock
Southern Scrub Robin, Gilberts whistler, Shy Heathwren, Yellow Plumed
Honeyeater, Chestnut Quail-thrush, Horsfields Bronze Cuckoos were abundant,
Spotted nightjar (heard), Yellow-rumped Pardalote.
Other birds for Nombinne NR
Black eared Cuckoo, Grey Fronted Honeyeater, Splendid Wren, Pink Cockatoo,
Mulga Parrot.
Mt Hope, Spotted Bowerbird
Near Quanda NR (west of Nyngan)
Superb parrots, several groups of up to 12 individuals, Pink Cockatoo, Blue
Bonnet,
We couldn't find any RLW at the wheat Paddock, though possibly heard them
once. The Gilberts whistlers tried very heard to pretend to be RLWs by doing
a slow call, but would soon revert to a more normal, faster call.
Cheers
Graham Turner
