Hi Cas

I've not got all of the details from other survey teams as yet but the team I was leading had no such luck. However, we did observe a male Superb Fairy-wren performing the "face fan" display, with auriculars extended and the crest rather flattened.

Hi all

A quick note to let you all know that the Northern Beaches Fairy- wren Survey weekend went over very well, with dozens participating in the surveys and
presentation night and plenty of excellent records.
Everything went surprisingly smoothly, though we plan to examine the entire process, outcomes and survey methodology to find ways that we can improve
things next year.

Almost everyone who participated on the teams was totally new to bird
watching. We also had a number of children and teenagers along. Given that one of the main goals of the weekend was to get people out into nature who
normally might not do so makes the weekend an even greater success.

Some people got a trifle moist on one of the teams when it rained right at
the end of the survey period on Saturday. However, Sunday turned on
fantastic weather and plenty of excellent data were collected. We had a great time with these delightful birds on my survey team. Most team members were total novices but everyone was able to split the Variegated and Superb Fairy-wrens by their appearance and calls by the time we had completed the
survey.

Thanks to Mia Dalby-Ball (Pittwater Council), John Gale, Marita Macrae, Cathy Hemrey (Coastal Environment Centre), Kuringai National Park and all of
the people who took part.

Happy fairy-wrenning
