Apologies

A timely warning for anyone using the social networking sites like Facebook, Hi5 or Quechup - and probably others.

WHen you sign up the system asks for either your webmail username / password or for the location of your addressbook. Then it simply spams EVERYONE in your addressbook with one or more invitations to join! I think Quechup is worse because it shares the addresses in your addressbook with 3rd parties - but I'm not sure about this. It has been talked about on some education mailing lists I read.

These systems usually tell you that you HAVE to share this info to join up - but there is usually a way around it. If there isn't, go to a different networking site!

Tom,
There must be a bit about. I received an invitation from Colin Trainor off the OBC news group as well.

Cheers,

 Hi All,

Apologies if you have received an unusual email from me regarding hi5.com

I received a similar message from a friend this morning and made the mistake
of accepting the offer.......I didn't realise but I unknowingly sent
invitations to anyone in my inbox with a bigpond/gmail/hotmail etc account!

Please ignore the message (....if it doesn't interest you!)

Tom
