I was living on Coraberra Station, just N of Port Augusta in 1991 and across
the road on Mount Arden Station roamed about 30 wild ostriches. It was soon
after this that the owners, realizing their value, built a corral on the
property (western myall woodland and chenopod plains) and rounded them up
and took them S to a farm with the intention of breeding them. Not sure how
successful that was but do know they left one or two escapees behind at
Mount Arden. These one or two were seen by me several times during early
1990s but not sure if any left there now. This station nestles on the W side
of Flinders Ranges and is adjacent to the Big Tent Hill - a local landmark
next to the Stuart Highway, some 25 kn N of Port Augusta. Would not surprise
me if small number still exist there.

In 1977 a friend and I were shooting rabbits along the road north of
Port Augusta to Hawker at the base of the Flinders Ranges, South
Australia. We did come across a flock of about twenty Ostriches. They
were very unusual after seeing Emus everywhere else. I think we shot
one. They were feral and not in a properly fenced yard. Soon after I
found out that they were worth, at that time, something stupid like
$35,000 per pair. Don't know if they are still there or not.

Hi All,
Does anyone have information on tickable Ostriches in
Australia?
There was a population somewhere on the Eyre Peninsula SA, is
this
still extant?
Cheers
