Duck movements and Lewin's Rail

Yesterday there were 9 Blue-billed Ducks (4 m, 4 f & 1 imm male) at Lake Wallace, Wallerawang (central-west NSW). This is the first time I've recorded them at this location. At the same time, they have disappeared from the Lithgow sewage ponds (except for one male) - a location where they've been seen reliably for the last few years. As these two sites are only about 5km apart, it's quite likely they are the same birds.

The recent rain seems to have caused a mass desertion of the Lithgow sewage ponds - usually brimming with waterfowl including many Pink-eared, Aust. Shovelers and Hoary-headed Grebes etc, yesterday it was eerily quiet with just a couple of Hardheads and the one Blue-billed! In about 20 years I've never seen so few ducks there!

Today in Katoomba I heard a Lewin's Rail calling from the gully below my house (a regular location).

Cheers,

Carol
