Hello all,

I can also vouch for this method. Whilst doing fieldwork in central western NSW in late 1997, I was deeply engrossed in extracting a whistler from a mist net (finally caught the right bird after several days trying!). My wife said to me, what is that strange galah? After turning around it was my first sighting of truly Australia's best falcon (and hence bird ;) ), harassing a flock of galahs before cruising overhead. Since then my wife has become very good at ID raptors, and rather non-plussed at seeing greys, much to many a birders dismay!

Cheers,
Paul McDonald

Hello all,

No, nothing about new Australian bird species today, unfortunately.

There's been a bit of talk about grey falcons of late. I thought I'd
relate the story of my only meeting with one.

Dave, a non-birder mate of mine and I were at Fort Grey in Sturt NP,
NSW, in mid-2000. Early one morning we're chatting and having a cup of
coffee with his pet border collie and Dave says, "Mate, what's that bird behind you up in the tree?" I've turned, looked, jumped out of my chair
and almost had a heart-attack, grabbing my bins and slowly pacing
towards the tree the falcon was in. I had a twenty second view of the
bird, then it took into the air and disappeared.

So, the moral of the story... always have a non-birding mate with you
when looking for a grey falcon.
