Six Painted Snipe, 20 Gouldian Finches and 10 Yellow Chats were highlights
of this year's Argyle Diamonds Birdwatch event. A number of Rio Tinto
mines run annual birdwatch events in partnership with Birds Australia and
BirdLife International. This year's event at Argyle Diamonds in the
Kimberley took us to a number of semi-arid sites around the mine,
highlights being about 20 Gouldians at the mine accommodation and
scatterings of Pictorellas, Star Finches, a few Yellow-rumped Mannikins
and Little Eagle at nest. Gouldians were also seen easily at Wyndham
Sculpture Park. A boat trip on Lake Argyle (Ramsar site and Important Bird
Area) stopped at an island known for its Yellow Chats and also found at
least six (three male, three female) Painted Snipe. The historical sites
for Purple-crowned Fairy-Wrens where the Ord River meets Lake Argyle had
no suitable habitat and as this species has not been seen by the boat
skipper since the big 2001 floods, it seems likely that it has disappeared
from this site. Lake Argyle birding trips are available by boat charter
