There were a number of Crescent honeyeaters at Barren Grounds Nature
Reserve today. I did the Griffiths trail walk, and found them at the
Glen (about 2-3 kms from the car park along the northern track); and on
the track both sides of the Stone Bridge (about 2km from the car park
taking the southern track). They seemed to be gleaning food from both
leaves and small branches of eucalypts, although i couldn't see what
they were eating. None of the eucalypts were in flower. There always
seemed to be a lot of Red Wattlebirds in the areas where the Crescent
honeyeaters were.
Also quite a lot of Eastern spinebills and New Holland Honeyeaters. Just
a few Little Wattle Birds. Not much in flower, only the Banksia
ericifolia, and that was past it's best. Otherwise rather quiet - no
Bristlebirds calling on the whole walk (and no Ground Parrots flew up to
say hi).
Barren Grounds is about 80? km south west of Sydney and is largely heath
and woodland on top of the escarpment there.
cheers
Jill
