Hi Birders,
Central Coast Group of Birding NSW held their annual trip to Quorrobolong
(co-inciding with the National Regent Honeyeater and Swift Parrot survey
day), a pastoral and woodland area c. 10 km SSE of Cessnock NSW on Sasturday
4 August 2007. Gwen &b Arthur Biggs were the leaders, and primarily we visit
three private properties each with some bush and pastoral areas, and checked
out the birds at the nearby large Ellalong Swamp and wetlands and farmlands
along Heaton Road, Quorrobolong.
Good rains fell in June and some follow up rain in July meant that seasonal
conditions are good although some recent frosts have held back pasture
growth. The Forest Red Gum was flowering well and Musk Lorikeets were seen
at every site and could be heard at many more sites as you drove around.
The highlight of the trip was finding 8 Swift Parrots feeding on lerps in
Rough-barked Apple and Red Mahoganies, but keeping very quiet and then after
a while, about 20 m away, we saw 3+ Regent Honeyeaters. The Regents were
found at the end of our hour long stop and it is most likely that more are
present. This will have to be checked out this week. Also at this site were
Fuscous & Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters, Brown Treecreeper & many Little
Lorikeets. Grey-crowned Babblers were found at three locations, at the
second location they werer present with Blue-faced Honeyeaters.
An adult Rose Robin was seen with Jacky Winters at Oakleigh HSD, while
Wedge-tailed Eagles were seen here and at 2 other locations. All up the 18
observers saw 83 species for the day.
