Hi Birders,
Barking Owls are not unknown in the Sydney Region as there are some older
Barking Owl records including the pair that nested in the Hornsby Heights
area 1974-76; one Bobbin Head May-June 1974; one Bantry Bay Aug-Sept 1974;
Castle Hill 23/6/1983; 2 Berowra Creek, Hornsby Heights December 1983; and
in the past 10 years there have been records at Seven Hills 15 June 1996; 1
Arcadia Mar-May 1996; Eastwood 29/10/1996 in Ernie Hoskins garden!; 1 in a
factory at Penrith 1 April 2002; finally 1 heard calling Freemans Reach 13
December 2004.
There have been regular records just outside the County of Cumberland at
Stannix Park, and at least three pairs regularly occur/are resident on the
Central Coast in the Umina, Mangrove Mountain and Saratoga-Davistown areas.
All records taken from the NSW Annual Bird Reports published by Birding
NSW.
So here is hoping that Charles gets confirmation of his observation at
Chatswood, it should be a good record. Ofcourse, hopefully he was not
hearing some one esle playing a Barking Owl tape, it would not be the first
time that that has occurred!
