In late July the National Library will be releasing a publication on the
paradise parrot (Glimpses of Paradise: The Quest for the Beautiful
Parrakeet, by Penny Olsen ) - John Gilbert described it to Gould as 'the
most beautiful of the whole tribe I have ever seen in Australia'. The
book traces the story of the parrot from Gilbert's discovery of it in
the 1840s to its probable extinction in the 1920s. For anyone able to
visit Canberra between now and October 14, there's an exhibition curated
by Penny on the topic in the NLA's visitor centre.

Dr Penny Olsen has spent much time researching the subject in the NLA's
collections, and published an article on it while a research fellow in
the Library a couple of years ago - see

Beautiful Parrakeet)

Gould spent 18 months around Scone/Murrurundi collecting and
drawing, but his wife, and others, did many of the bird drawings, which
were then hand coloured, from skins.
Gould had an amazing life, and his bird collector was the ultimate
Australian birdo, ie John Gilbert, who ended up dead, speared through
the neck, on the Leichardt expedition.
If you want to flesh out Australian birds, browse through "John
Gould the Birdman". There may be one on Gilbert called "John Goulds
Collector" or similar, although that may have been the title of a
library or museum exhibit.
John White, also a great Australian bird collector, lived near
Scone, where Gould's residence when he was there is still extant. This
was a great area for birds prior to clearing, and still is, but the good
birding areas are not particularly accessible

                                    Cheers
                                            Michael
