I was up there in 2003, it was about 3-4 hrs from Archer River into Iron Range. You'll see another road (Frenchmans Rd) that cuts a more direct route crossing the Pascoe River, that road it NOT recommended, apparently the crossing of the Pascoe R can be quite hairy and it can be quite hard to find the interesection on the main road north. If you're after some more detail look for "Cape York an adventurer's guide" written by Ron & Viv Moon, it details various campsites and side tracks along the way. There is really only one road into Iron Range, and about 3 campsites. Chilli Beach was the only one with a toilet and water, though not sure if it's been replaced after the cyclone damage, the Chilli Beach area was closed last winter still. The water is only good for washing, coming from an old pump and looking a little brown.

When we were there in 2003 it was a good spot for palm cockatoos, they were tolerant of approach there (and no where else). Cooks hut was good for marbled frogmouth and there were quite a few birds around Gordon Creek. There is also an old road passing through a stretch of rainforest it cuts from the main road in across to Rainforest Camping area which is worth exploring. It's a km or so before the "T" where the road splits to chilli beach or Lockart River. The patches of rainforest accessible by road are really quite small. We found a lot of large taied nightjar near Chilli Beach. and watch out for the brush turkeys (purple wattled variety) they will raid your garbage and make a big mess if you turn your back on them.
