Yes it is essential to have a 4WD to get to Mitchell Plateau and a high
clearance one at that. There is a deep muddy area near Mitchell Plateau which
is claiming some vehicles. I got through last week but I know of 2 4WDs that
didn't. One had to be towed to Kununurra at a cost of $4000.00!! The Black
Grasswrens were easily seen. If you come past Mt Barnett I will draw you a
mudmap of where they were seen last week. (Had good views of Chestnut-backed
Button-Quail too) I haven't heard of anyone seeing them at Bachsten Range
behind Mt Elizabeth this year but I can draw you a mudmap of that area too.
They were seen last year. Nobody has seen them at the jump up about 50km behind
Mt Elizabeth for a few years as far as I am aware. Just be aware that the track
into Bachsten is diabolical. Far worse than going into Mitchell Plateau.

I am very happy to help any birders passing Mt Barnett on the Gibb River Road.
Just ask at the Roadhouse and they will point out where we live. We will be
away most of August driving the Canning Stock Route.
