This may well have been a question of looking at the long term costs and the
best use of BAs funds...so that (presumably) the funds that would have been
used for the upkeep of Newhaven in the future are now diverted to something
equally or more rewarding, while the new custodians continue to maintain
Newhaven as a reserve (and the nominal sale price probably encouraged a
suitably minded party to take it on) - sounds like good "bird business" to
me!
