Went to see if the Powerful Owls were still around at Cumberland SF today (West Pennant Hills, Sydney). As soon as we arrived we heard the sound of people working to clear the fallen tree where they were roosting earlier this year. We assumed that they wouldn't be around but started walking in that direction anyway. Fortunately we ran into a ranger (leading a group of school kids) who informed us that they had been roosting over in the IBM bush behind the grass paddock behind the nursery. So off we went; found the track at the back of the grass paddock, then ran into a couple of very friendly IBM staff on their lunchtime walk. Seeing me staring into the treetops armed with a large camera and pair of binoculars they knew why we were there! They then proceeded to lead us straight to where one Owl was perched directly above the track on a boardwalk timber section. The ranger said they had been waiting for the Owls to move and made sure they weren't going to breed at the old location before they started any work on repairing the track/treefall. They have been there for the past 6 weeks.

If anyone needs more specific directions let me know.

Other interesting birds seen were White-browed Scrubwren, Brown Gerygone, Golden Whistler, large flock of 50+ Silvereyes (Tas race by the looks).

Cheers
Dave
