Asian Koel
On May 22, I saw a male Asian Koel at the Christmas Island rubbish
tip. As this species has also been recorded on the island in July, it
is possible that it is a rare resident there. No koels were calling.
I saw no other Asian vagrants, which is not surprising considering
the time of year. Abbott's boobies were in full nesting mode, but the
hawk-owl was neither seen nor heard at its usual golf course haunt,
or anywhere else. Other interesting records for the island included
Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Pied Stilt and Nankeen Night-Heron.
